Plum Purple Painting

Painting the colors of plums is exciting. There are so many subtle hues of red, purple, blue, and sometimes even orange and yellow, that I love the challenge of creating these little fruits on my canvas. This painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel. When the paint dries, this little piece of art will be for sale at Small Impressions Paintings along with many of my other small still life oil paintings.

Tulip Season Art

Tulip season is almost over. These lovely treats have such a short life, even in the Pacific Northwest where spring is cool and damp. This painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel. It can be purchased for $35.00 plus $6.50 for shipping to US addresses and will extend that early spring feeling that exits before we're ready. Visit my online gallery, Small Impressions to see other small floral paintings, landscapes, and still life art.

Evening Sails Original Painting

Yesterday I was hoping that if I posted a sunny painting, the weather might change. No such luck. The rain has poured down much of the afternoon and hope for some sunshine in the near future is a dream with which the weatherman teases his viewers. In spite of his unchanging prediction for the Pacific Northwest portion of the US, I'm painting an outdoor scene. This sailboat painting, completed with a limited palette, is 5x7 inches. Since boating season has begun, I'm looking forward to painting more sailboats, hopefully the next one will be sunny and full of the promise of summer fun.

Really Big Dog--Great Dane Painting

On my recent quest to paint dog walkers, I ran across this Great Dane. His owner was actually in tow, but I left her out of the painting. I love the way these big guys trot along and in spite of their size have found they are usually quite friendly. I couldn't help but put him down on canvas. The painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel.

Dog Walking and New Acquaintances

This painting was created from the same palette I used yesterday, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, and white, but I began with an underpainting of yellow ochre. The yellow ochre peaking through the cool has an interesting effect. The subject was inspired by a stroll with my daughter's dog through a local farmer's market. Many people took their dogs along as they shopped the market. The fun thing is that dogs are great at making friends. They say hello in their unique way to people and other dogs alike. It was an enjoyable experience the dog introduced us to a number of new acquaintances. This experience inspired me to begin thingking about working on a series of dog walkers and their dogs. Time will tell if the idea actually sparks and grows or just remains a little 5x7 kernal of a thought.

Winter Palette, Winter Trees

This morning was spent painting some little studies with a limited palette. Alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, and titanium produced several little paintings. This one is 5x7 inches. I started with a blue underpainting which kept the coolness of winter on the canvas.

Barn in Spring

A few weeks ago, late in the afternoon, I noticed this barn and the new foliage of spring on the trees that surrounded it. It sat in the shade of a hill covered with evergreen trees which contrasted with the light colored roof of the barn and the new foliage of the trees. I've passed the barn many times and have contemplated painting it. The light this time caught my eye and the results are this 8x10 inch oil painting. If you visit my online gallery, Small Impressions Paintings, you can see some of my other paintings of barns. This painting will join the others when the paint is dry.

Evening Sun, Shapes in the Trees

Today's 5x7 inch painting was inspired by the negative shapes that were constructed by evening sunlight and the trunks of trees. I began by painting yellow shapes on a dark panel. There was no thought about painting trees, just the yellow shapes. After that, I splashed a little green and yellow in the foreground to provide some depth and called it good. It was fast and fun and I like the abstraction that evolved.

Lemon Blue, Oil Painting

Today's painting was fast and fun. When I created it, focusing on shapes and colors without regard to the subject matter was my goal. Even though I tried to avoid thinking abou the idea that I was painting lemons, it still turned out looking like lemons. I'm quite satisfied with the abstract results. The painting is 8x8 inches on a gessoed hardboard panel.

Breakfast Cow, Original Oil Painting

On my recent bike trip, I stopped by a field of cows and snapped some reference photos. It's been a while since I've painted a cow, so I reviewed some of my previous cattle paintings hoping for some inspiration. This one is 5x7 inches on a hardboard panel and is for sale at Small Impressions Gallery at Etsy for $50.00 plus $6.50 for shipping. Because it is painted on a 1/4 inch hardboard panel, it will last a lifetime. I call her the Breakfast Cow because she looked like she was getting her first meal of the day. Carbon River Abstraction

Yesterday I took a wonderful 35 mile bike ride on the Foothills Trail that runs through the Orting Valley below Mount Rainier and along the Carbon River in Washington State. The weather was gorgeous and I stopped to snap photos all along the route. This 16x20 inch oil painting is the result of some of the inspiration I took home. After experimenting with several underpaintings on smaller versions, I settled on this combination of a red underpainting and large brushes.

Finished or Not? Work in Progress--Maybe

A funny thing happened yesterday. I started working on this 16x20 inch oil painting. It is a larger version of a small painting I completed a while ago. I wanted to experiment with a blue underpainting. Usually my underpaintings are warm--just a personal preference. I stopped for the day. As is my custom, I took a photo and uploaded to my Flickr account where I store photos of my art. I marked it as a work in progress, but as usual didn't mark it as privated figuring anyone who wants to look at my work can do so. Now here's the crazy thing: Someone submitted it to Stumbleupon and within just a few hours, it was viewed over 188 times. Normally I would enjoy the surprise and finish the painting, but I received comments that I shouldn't touch it, but leave it just the way it is. Now I don't know what to do. Please help by leaving comments on my blog with your advice. I need to know if it is an abberation that someone thinks it looks good like it is or if it really should be left alone. I'll appreciate your feedback!

Pheasant Season, Original Oil Painting

It has been a while since I've painted anything much larger than 8x10, but today inspiration to paint larger came along. I call this painting Pheasant Season because it reminds me of a sunny autumn day when the pheasant hunters take their dogs and head out to the fields in pursuit of pheasants. The trees are bare and eyes are on the grass. Most often, I'm hoping the pheasant gets away and the dog and the man finish up empty handed. I'll never be a hunter myself. This painting is in oil on a 16x20 inch stretched canvas.

Yard Work and Paint

This morning was spent in the studio, dabbing around on this and that. At about noon, I left my dabbing behind with this little painting sitting on the drying shelf and headed out to the garden. Planted geraniums, tomatoes, zuchinni, and violas. Spring is in the air! This painting is 5x7 inches on a canvas panel.
